Woodworking tips for beginner or experienced woodworker.

What Can You Make With a Scroll Saw?

So, you’re new to the world of woodworking and the conversation inevitably turns to what can you make with a scroll saw. The simple answer is any project with a cutting depth greater than 0.5 inches. Obviously, this is not as inclusive as the next answer. You may make anything from small intricate projects, like toy boxes for dolls or small picture frames, to large complex projects such as furniture or car parts. If your interest is in something more ambitious, you’ll be happy to know that there are plenty of ideas from which to choose.

One of the most popular types of scroll saws is the table top scroll saw. These saws are intended for light duty woodworking, and because they are so versatile, they usually come with multiple speeds and cutting depths. They’re not necessary for all woodworkers, but they make an excellent choice for people who work on smaller jobs. The standard table saw is usually very inexpensive, and they are usually adequate for a beginner’s first project. For more experienced woodworkers, however, a scroll saw is a necessity.

If you’re into detailed projects, then you might want to consider a router scroll saw. Unlike the table saw, these saws can cut into various shapes. They usually take the form of a triangle or square with a stationary table top “router” that locks into place over the blade. Routing scroll saw patterns tend to be less precise, but they can produce some amazing detailed cuts.

If you’re interested in using a scroll saw at home, one option is a portable table saw. These saws are generally made from a combination of wood and metal, and are powered by either a small or large battery. Most models come with a blade guard, which protects the blade while in use, and makes blade sharpening simple. You may also be able to buy portable scroll saws that use gas instead of electricity. These saws generally have fewer features than their electric counterparts, but they still pack a powerful motor.

There are a number of other saws you might consider as you start your scroll saw discovery. For example, some scroll saws come with accessories such as fences, guides, and even chalkboards to help you create a detailed level cutting pattern. Some scroll saws can also use compound miter saw blades. Almost any saw can be used as a scroll saw, and the possibilities are nearly endless.

If you have just started making scroll saw crafts yourself, you’ll quickly find that there are a lot of options out there. The question is how much do you want to invest? One option is to spend a little bit of money and get an off-the-shelf scroll saw that has many pre-programmed functions. Another option is to spend a little bit more money and get a custom-made scroll saw with all the bells and whistles, and one that will be very easy to use for any level of experience. Regardless, of what you choose, making scroll saw crafts can be fun and satisfying, and can give you a lot of enjoyment from the process!
