Can You Paint On Wood Kitchen Countertops?

If you are like many homeowners who are considering remodeling their kitchen, one of the items that will be on your list of items to get done is your wood kitchen countertop. A wood kitchen countertop makes your kitchen beautiful and adds a great new look to the room. In addition to being beautiful, wood blends in well with the rest of the decor in your home, so it is easy to change the look of your wood kitchen countertop when you want to. However, do you use wood paint for wood kitchen countertops?

Although wood is a beautiful natural material, painting wood can be a little tricky, depending on the type of wood that you have and the type of paint you want to use. Some woods are more susceptible to stains than others, so you may need to get some professional advice before beginning. Before beginning any paint project, you should test a small area of your wood countertop with a drop or two of water. If the water dries instantly, you can go ahead and begin painting.

If your wood kitchen countertop is a little bit older, you may be able to take it as far as you like before painting it. Most manufacturers of wood kitchen countertops will let you sand the wood to your liking. Once you sand it down to a certain depth, you can cover it with the primer that you are going to use. When you are finished sanding the wood countertop, you should allow it to dry completely before using it again.

If your wood kitchen countertop has stains on it, you may want to use an acid based stain remover prior to applying the paint. To do this, you would dip a q-tip into the solution and then apply the cleaner onto your wood. Allow the solution to sit for fifteen minutes. Then use the q-tip again to remove the excess solution from your wood. Be sure to wipe it down thoroughly before applying the primer.

If you are looking for a type of wood that you can use countertop paint on, you might want to think about getting birch wood. This wood is popular because of its beautiful grain and you can even sand it down if you don’t like the grain. You should note that this type of wood should be stained only in very light shades. Darker shades of wood will most likely scratch your furniture.

If you have already painted your wood kitchen countertops and they still don’t look quite right, you may want to try using a wood stain. Wood stains are available in several different types, so you should have no problem finding one that you can use. Just be sure to get one that is specifically designed for unfinished wood. If you do not do this, the stain will just sit on top of the color of the wood instead of adhering to it like the other types will.

You should also be aware that you can use countertop paint on wood that is peeling. You should take some sandpaper and scrape off the old finish from the wood. If there is any paint still on the wood, you can just scrape it off. You will want to make sure that you use a very fine sandpaper so that you don’t damage the wood underneath. Once you have removed all of the old paint, you can reapply the stain onto the wood and be done.

As you can see, painting your wood kitchen countertops can be a great way to update your cabinets and other kitchen areas. The most difficult part of the whole process will probably be just picking out the colors you want. There are so many beautiful colors to choose from that you should have no problem coming up with a few favorites. Just remember to use something that is labeled stain-resistant, and you will be all right. Good luck, and happy painting!
